Gallery - 2 : "The Mind's Eye"

By the term "Mind's Eye", I mean images you might invoke, with eyes closed, from your memory or imagination, of a view from one place to another, distant place. These paintings include a wide variety of landmarks and landscapes that I associate with each region across the country, some personal and some cliché. All paintings are acrylic on canvas.

    Oh! Canada!

Oh! Canada! (sold) was commissioned for the office of a corporate president with whom I developed a list of the many elements to be included in the painting, each representative of Canada or a Canadian region. At three feet by five feet, it is the largest canvas I have painted to date (excluding murals and a theatric backdrop).

As with some of the other "Mind's Eye" paintings presented here in Gallery 2, One Dominion (48" X 24"), (sold) on the left, also depicts Canada characterized by regional features and landmarks. The view is from the east coast to the west. Because scale is necessarily sacrificed in these images anyway, I have allowed myself the fun of exagerating the size of some elements relative to others (e.g. the Ontario farmhouse in the centre of the painting compared to the nearby pasture with Holstein cows) and I've taken liberty depiicting metaphore as reality (i.e. the "Golden Horseshoe").

A Slice of Canada (36" X 8") (sold) on the right, was painted with the same sentiment as "One Dominion", but on a canvas even more proportionally vertical.

    Atlantic

Atlantic to Pacific, 1993 (24" X 30") (sold) was the first of my "Mind's Eye" paintings. It the product of my imagination, which seemed boundless after the awesome experience of visiting western Canada for the first time in 1993. Although I had spent time in the Maritimes in the early 1970's, the paintings portraying this coast-to-coast concept grew richer after my 1996 visit to Atlantic.
